Phyllis (Bechtel) Graybill

Hanover, Pa.

Phyllis and her husband, Dave, live in Hanover. “I met Dave in front of Eichelberger. He would go by at lunch and I was sitting outside of school. He saw me and asked me out.” They have three children and nine grandchildren. Phyllis worked at the glove factory, also as a hairdresser, and also as a housewife. Dave was a mechanical repairman for P.H.G. They are both retired.

Her hobbies are quilting, knitting, gardening, camping, and tending to their fish pond which has “about 60 fish and frogs.” She also enjoys babysitting their grandchildren. She is an active volunteer in church activities with the Hanover Council of Churches, and at St. Davids U.C.C. Church.

She and Dave have traveled to Florida, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. They enjoy attending sports events including NASCAR, major league baseball, and college and high school sports events. They also attend live performances of major entertainers, plays, county fairs and events their children host and their grandchildren are in.

Phyllis sometimes thinks about the good old days when … “I think it was a lot easier to raise our children then. Now, there are so many activities to go to that it’s hard to keep the family together because everyone is going in a different direction.” Today she likes, “Now that we are retired, we can take our time and pick and choose the things we like to do at a more leisurely pace.”

She is proud of …“I’m proud to have found such a caring husband who always thinks of others, and to have had three wonderful children. We are a close knit family with nine grandchildren, ages 12 to 23.”

Her message to her classmates is …

“Enjoy each day and be thankful for what the Lord has given you. It only takes sickness to make you realize how precious family and friends are. We’ve been through a lot of tough times in our family, but always came out on top. We thank God for that. The years go by so fast, it’s hard to believe 50 years have passed since we were teens. We will be celebrating 50 years of marriage in 2004.”
