Dating materials: Postcards are a valuable source of the visual history of communities. Vendors usually date postcards by postmarks. When postmarks are not available, approximate dates are identified by the process used to create the card. Years can pass between the time a photo is taken or rendition of photo is painted and the time of publication. Additional time passes between publication or use. Many of the cards are never used but kept as keepsakes. We also use Alumni to date cards. In particular, many cards can be dated by the model of cars or lack there of that are included in the picture. Cards can be dated by comparing them to other historical documents. This is the first posting of this collection. Please feel free to critique the dates included here. Email Paul Hentz at phentz@hpsd.k12.pa.us |
