Sadie Hawkins Day Dance? |
Betty Fulco remembers going to the Y (YWCA) every Saturday night to a dance. Once every year we had a special dance called the Sadie Hawkins Day dance. Instead of the boys asking the girls to dance, roles were reversed and the girls had to ask the boys for the to escort them to this special dance. This tradition grew out of the the comic strip and Broadway musical "Li'l Abner". In the comic strip the female Daisy Mae character could never get Li'l Abner, the male character, to date her because he was a bashful Mountain Boy. So once a year they had a Sadie Hawkins dance so the girls could ask the boys. |

William Dell, Carol Shaffer, Ann Shaffer, Gary Study. This picture represents recreational dancing in the Eichelberger Gym during Lunch Break which was more than an hour long. This is not a Sadie Hawkins Dance. However, one of our fourth grade teachers told her class that she thought this was a picture of a Sadie Hawkins dance which they had "back then." Also present in the classroom was a senior student who was the Teaching Counseling Assistant assigned to that fourth grade. The seniors and the fourth grade wanted to know what a Sadie Hawkins dance was and Betty was kind enough to fill them in. |
